Nothing beats fresh chips and salsa. It is my go-to snack during the day while I work from home, but I’ve never found a favorite salsa to buy from the store. I am very picky when it comes to salsa, because I don’t like fresh tomatoes. I know. So, when I eat salsa, I prefer roasted tomatoes.
My brother made this salsa recipe for my family last year, and I haven’t bought salsa from the store since! This homemade salsa recipe is my go-to now. It’s smoky, a little spicy, and packed with flavor thanks to ROASTED canned tomatoes, chipotle peppers, green chilies, garlic, onion, and cilantro. My whole family loves it, and it’s now the only salsa I’ll eat. The best part about this salsa recipe is that it takes 10 minutes, and there’s no chopping required other than cutting an onion into quarters. That’s it!

Homemade Salsa Ingredients Breakdown
Here’s what you’ll need for this easy salsa recipe:
- Diced roasted tomatoes (15 oz can) – The base of this salsa. Using canned tomatoes keeps it quick and affordable.
- Diced green chilies (4 oz can) – Adds a mild kick and flavor.
- Chipotle in adobo (1 pepper) – Smoky, spicy depth. Use more for extra heat and smokiness.
- Onion (¼) – White or yellow onion works.
- Garlic (1-3 cloves) – Fresh garlic makes a big difference.
- Chili powder (1 tsp) – Boosts the spice profile.
- Salt (1 tsp) – Balances the flavors.
- Cilantro (handful) – Fresh, bright flavor that ties it all together.
Optional add-ins: jalapeño or serrano for more spice, or an extra chipotle in adobo for smokier flavor.
How to Make This Salsa Recipe with Canned Tomatoes
One of the reasons I love this salsa so much? It’s basically foolproof.
Step 1 – Add ingredients to a bowl or blender. Dump everything in: tomatoes, green chilies, chipotle, onion, garlic, chili powder, salt, and cilantro.
Step 2 – Blend. Use an immersion blender (my favorite for easy cleanup) or a regular blender/food processor. Blend until you get your preferred texture — I like it smooth, but you can leave it as chunky as you want.
Step 3 – Taste and adjust. Add more salt, more chipotle, or extra chilies if you want more spice.
Step 4 – Chill and serve. This salsa is great right away, but even better after an hour in the fridge when the flavors meld together.
Ways to Serve Homemade Salsa
This salsa isn’t just for tortilla chips (though that’s always a win). Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:
- On tacos or burritos.
- As a topping for rice bowls or nachos.
- With grilled chicken or steak.
- Stirred into scrambled eggs for a quick breakfast upgrade.
- As part of a Mexican-inspired dinner spread with guacamole, queso, and chips.

Homemade Salsa FAQ’s
This salsa will stay fresh in the fridge for about 5 days in an airtight container.
To make homemade salsa spicier, you can add a jalapeno or serrano pepper to the recipe. Or, add red pepper flakes 1/2 tsp at a time until you get the desired spice level.
You can! I prefer the flavor of the roasted tomatoes, but you could exchange them for 2-3 fresh tomatoes instead.
